Watching the flat landscape of crops and green fields go by, dotted here and there with sheep and cows and edged in a horizon of tree-draped mountains, I was reminded of my own Willamette Valley back in western Oregon. Occasionally, I could imagine the train I was on to be just outside of Junction City or Harrisburg or Wilsonville. But then I would be shocked into reality as an old shirtless man cutting in his field by hand with a scythe or a string of horse-drawn carts laden with watermelon suddenly flashed by amidst the passing scenery. I immediately knew I was a long way from my Willamette Valley home, both in distance and, it seemed, in time. I was only an hour out of Bucharest, Romania, but in that short hour it appeared I had stepped back a century or three.
I had been working in Bucharest for nearly two months by this time, but, because of a certain amount of language-challenged trepidation, I kept delaying my explorations beyond a hard-earned comfort-circle I’d carved out for myself within a now semi-familiar Bucharest.
My work in Bucharest wasn’t exactly conducive to familiarizing myself with the Romanian language. I was a copy editor for an English business/tourism magazine there. I spent my days trying to polish the native Romanian writers’ attempts at Romanian-to-English translation. The literal translations I often received ranged from the humorous and easily corrected, “Music has the power to coagulate people,” to the extremely obscure and difficult, “An art museum looks like a warehouse. This can be understood if we attribute to the word the qualities of man’s DNA. These qualities could reach the apogee in this case.” Often, without the writer there to help me more clearly comprehend the ideas behind these esoteric passages, I was left on my own to make a good guess.
